Unfortunately the 2020 Venice Carnival corresponded with the Corona virus outbreak and the last two days of official events were cancelled.
Fortunately many of the participants were still able to promenade, and because of the outbreak there were far fewer other tourists than I expected.
The level of detail and craft in the carnival costumes was extraordinary. It was fascinating to see and it was interesting to chat with the participants – many of whom had travelled from around the world.
The impact on Venice itself this year is huge – the number of tourists is obviously an ongoing issue – however when the tourists stay away many of the residents and business will suffer.
The masks were still immensely popular, and long may this continue!
